Commentary 31/01/2017

The year-end rally triggered by the election of Donald Trump as President of the United States continued through January, with equity indices all ending in positive territory, with the notable exception of European equities, which closed the month down -0.4%. Emerging markets strongly outperformed their developed counterparts, thanks to gains in the Asian and South American regions. The cyclical sectors' return to grace seen at 2016's close, also continued with a sharp rise in sectors linked to commodities and IT. At the other end of the spectrum, consumer durables and the health sector made little progress. In Asia, the best performances were to be seen in China (+7.0%), South Korea (+8.4%) and Singapore (+8.3%), while Indonesia closed the month on a flat line. In this environment, Asian Capital Holdings-Asian Equities contributed positively to the upturn in the markets, despite a bias towards strategies targeting quality and growth, and were therefore less able to capture the shifts in pro-cyclical markets. The portfolio comprised nine funds at January's end, all deploying long-only equity strategies. Four were invested in the Asia region as a whole, while the remaining five were dedicated country funds: two investing in China, one each in India and South Korea, and the last in Taiwan. During the month, an Asian regional fund was initiated in the portfolio.

(1) The rating grades the funds on a scale from 1 to 7. This rating system is based on the average fluctuations of the net asset value over the past five years. It corresponds to the variation range of the portfolio upwards and downwards. If the net asset value is less than 5 years old, the rating is determined by other regulatory calculation methods. Historical data such as those used to calculate the rating may not be a reliable indication of the future risk profile. The current category is neither a guarantee nor an objective. Category 1 does not signify a risk-free investment.
