Commentary 28/02/2017

On the heels of Wall Street, which has continued to break records (with the Dow Jones climbing for 12 trading sessions in a row to a 30 year record), European indices have maintained their uptrend. In the euro zone, economic statistics have confirmed the private sector business growth we witnessed for several months, with the euro zone's composite PMI peaking at 56.0 in February — very close to a six-year record. The improvement was seen in the manufacturing and services sectors, both in Germany and France. Note that the 10-year bond spread between these two countries widened 25 bps to reach its highest point since 2012, given the approaching presidential elections. On the corporate reporting side, the season has been positive overall, with expectations of EPS growth still climbing in 2017, from +12.8% to +14.3% for euro zone equities. At length, the M&A market has joined in, boosting the performance of certain sectors, such as consumption, after Kraft Foods dropped its $143 billion bid for Unilever, or the Reckitt Benckiser offer for Mead Johnson, which was accepted. At the sector level, pharmaceutical stocks performed well, against a backdrop of a supposed easing in the relationship between industry and the Trump administration regarding the price of prescription drugs. At the other end of the spectrum, financials — with banks in the vanguard — have suffered from rising political risk and falling yields in Europe.

(1) The rating grades the funds on a scale from 1 to 7. This rating system is based on the average fluctuations of the net asset value over the past five years. It corresponds to the variation range of the portfolio upwards and downwards. If the net asset value is less than 5 years old, the rating is determined by other regulatory calculation methods. Historical data such as those used to calculate the rating may not be a reliable indication of the future risk profile. The current category is neither a guarantee nor an objective. Category 1 does not signify a risk-free investment.
