Commentary 29/06/2018

The progress posted by the global cycle (given the strength of US growth, the normalisation of monetary policy without worsening corporate financial conditions, and the shift to better exchange rates for European companies) contrasts with persistent concerns expressed over the likely duration of this cycle — which is practically unparalleled in history. In this climate, the risk of escalating trade tensions casts doubt on the sustainability of such growth, while its strength raises concerns that the risk of further US monetary tightening could endanger the cycle. The slow-down in European activity indicators, plus the return of political risk to the euro zone, are also fuelling questions over the region's growth capacity. As a result, the stock market has been narrowing its horizon in favour of visible growth (with, for example, strong growth in the luxury sector, or structural growth in technology) at the expense of the financial and cyclical sectors. A number of more cyclical stocks were reduced over the month, among them Kingspan (building materials), Jenoptik (with strong semiconductor exposure) and Kion (materials handling and logistics equipment). In addition, profits were taken on Critéo, after its recent excellent performance. Despite its very low valuation, we have sold Dialog Semiconductor, which seems to be bogged down and is no longer offering growth over the next few years. A position has been initiated on UDG Healthcare. This is an Irish company providing services (sales, marketing, packaging, clinical services, etc.) to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.

(1) The rating grades the funds on a scale from 1 to 7. This rating system is based on the average fluctuations of the net asset value over the past five years. It corresponds to the variation range of the portfolio upwards and downwards. If the net asset value is less than 5 years old, the rating is determined by other regulatory calculation methods. Historical data such as those used to calculate the rating may not be a reliable indication of the future risk profile. The current category is neither a guarantee nor an objective. Category 1 does not signify a risk-free investment.
