Commentary 31/07/2018

July 2018 was calm on the financial markets with trading volumes in decline and markets performing well, particularly since political risk has generally decreased. Despite some palpable tension remaining on Italian bonds, the multiple media events staged by Italy's finance minister, campaigning for Italy to stay in the euro zone, have tended to reassure the markets. It was in this climate that the BTP-Bund spread narrowed by almost 10 bps on the 10-year bonds. In particular, it was the credit and emerging debt markets that outperformed (between 1.5% and 3%) in July. Given attractive valuations and an increase in risk-taking, especially on emerging debt, after several weeks of outflow July marked a turning point. Looking at movements on the leading interest rate charts it is interesting to note that performances are negative with, for example, 15 bps tightening on the German 10-year bund and 12 bps on the US 10-year T-Note. These performances are the result of better economic figures on both sides of the Atlantic, a rhetoric that is always positive from the US Federal Reserve, and a certain degree of appeasement on the trade war front. So, after weeks of flattening on various yield curves, rumours of a possible adjustment in rate control by the Bank of Japan — with an upward review — sparked global steepening on yield curves, with a 15 bps impact on Japan's 10-30 year bonds.

(1) The rating grades the funds on a scale from 1 to 7. This rating system is based on the average fluctuations of the net asset value over the past five years. It corresponds to the variation range of the portfolio upwards and downwards. If the net asset value is less than 5 years old, the rating is determined by other regulatory calculation methods. Historical data such as those used to calculate the rating may not be a reliable indication of the future risk profile. The current category is neither a guarantee nor an objective. Category 1 does not signify a risk-free investment.
