Commentary 31/03/2017

European investment grade credit spreads tightened slightly in March, but the market was negatively affected by the weakness in the core European sovereign market. Economic numbers in the region were generally positive in March, especially in Germany. Confidence indicators surprised on the upside. Inflation numbers continue to rise across the Eurozone, creating investor worries that the ECB's communication on future monetary policy could turn less dovish. Political concerns lessened in March compared to February, as the market was reassured both by the Dutch election results and the French election polling data. A notable exception to the slight spread compression was the energy sector, as oil fell during the month. European credit spreads outperformed US credit spreads, as investors reassessed the chances that President Trump could pass his fiscal and infrastructure proposals in light of the health care bill failure.

(1) The rating grades the funds on a scale from 1 to 7. This rating system is based on the average fluctuations of the net asset value over the past five years. It corresponds to the variation range of the portfolio upwards and downwards. If the net asset value is less than 5 years old, the rating is determined by other regulatory calculation methods. Historical data such as those used to calculate the rating may not be a reliable indication of the future risk profile. The current category is neither a guarantee nor an objective. Category 1 does not signify a risk-free investment.
