Commentary 31/05/2017

World bond markets posted gains in May. In Europe, the election of Mr.Macron provided a significant reduction in political risk and helped sentiment, allowing investment grade credit spreads to tighten (although the majority of the compression followed the 1st round results in April). The Itraxx Europe CDS investment grade index went from 67 to 62.The best performing sector, as could be expected on a reduction of political risk, was the financial sector. Eurozone macroeconomic numbers came in strong during the month, as growth, employment, business confidence and manufacturing all showed signs of continued improvement. 10 year bund yields were nonetheless unchanged for the month, as inflation figures came in lower than expected. The ECB, despite the better economic environment, gave no indication of a change in their highly accommodative monetary policy stance. The US bond markets had a slightly better month than their European counterparts. To the contrary of the Eurozone, political risk increased in the US, as President Trump's reflationary program seems harder and longer to implement. Although the employment picture remained robust, other activity indicators such as the ISM disappointed. A Fed hike in June already priced in, the market was looking for, and received, reassurance from the Fed that the balance sheet reduction will be extremely gradual.

(1) The rating grades the funds on a scale from 1 to 7. This rating system is based on the average fluctuations of the net asset value over the past five years. It corresponds to the variation range of the portfolio upwards and downwards. If the net asset value is less than 5 years old, the rating is determined by other regulatory calculation methods. Historical data such as those used to calculate the rating may not be a reliable indication of the future risk profile. The current category is neither a guarantee nor an objective. Category 1 does not signify a risk-free investment.
