Commentary 29/06/2018

The fund Premium Brands suffered during the month of June, due to strong correction seen among premium auto names, as result of increasing trade tensions. Daimler revised down its full year EBIT guidance, from slightly above to slightly below previous year level. BMW is reviewing its UK facilities post-Brexit to avoid potential operational risks. Tata Motors has been disappointing, down further 10% after recent JLR capital market day, due to lack of ambitious margin targets and details on cost reduction. Under trade uncertainties and fading investor confidence, we recognize the fact the stocks will take time to recover but do believe in these companies' abilities to drive superior volume growth given favorable premiumization trend, not to mention their attractive valuation. Starbucks announced strategic priorities to accelerate growth following a slower global comps in the quarter. The company embraces digital initiatives to address the more rapidly changing preferences and needs of consumers and strengthen customer engagement, leading to a growth of 13% year-on-year of active rewards members, in addition to a reassessment of capital return to shareholders at $25bn against prior $20bn by 2020. Nike reported strong quarter results with revenue up 13%, driven by +35% sales in Greater China and inflected sales trend in the US (+3% vs. a -6% prior quarter). The captain kept building a moat around its brand through innovation such as Flyknit and React, besides its digital connections with consumers via NikePlus. Provided ongoing consumer shift into athleisure, we reinforced Adidas, undisputed #2 player in the athletic market post recent stock correction. Richemont has also been strengthened, as sell-in trends of Swiss watch improved further, +10% year-on-year during first 5 months of 2018, on top of its strong portfolio of high end jewelry brands. Macy's rallied over 50%, and thus we took profits and reduced the position. We remain confident that premium brands will keep delivering solid sales growth and superior profitability.

(1) The rating grades the funds on a scale from 1 to 7. This rating system is based on the average fluctuations of the net asset value over the past five years. It corresponds to the variation range of the portfolio upwards and downwards. If the net asset value is less than 5 years old, the rating is determined by other regulatory calculation methods. Historical data such as those used to calculate the rating may not be a reliable indication of the future risk profile. The current category is neither a guarantee nor an objective. Category 1 does not signify a risk-free investment.
