Commentary 30/04/2018

US equity markets climbed modestly in April as trade tensions between the United States and China eased and macroeconomic numbers remained buoyant. Oil prices continued to rise, with spot crude on the WTI closing the month at $68/bbl (vs $65/bbl at end March), and with futures also starting to recover. In fact, global demand remains strong, inventories are back at their five-year lows, and US producers are demonstrating willingness to keep production controlled. Oil stocks have benefited from the up-tick in investor sentiment, as have the industry sub-segments in E&P (Whiting +20%), majors (Chevron +10%) and services (Patterson +22%). Despite this rebound, the rise in petroleum-linked equities remains well below that of oil prices, and stocks are trading at a -40% discount against the market. EdR US Value's outperformance in April came mainly from our investments in the energy sector. Indeed, its gap with the Russell 1000 Growth & Value index was virtually non-existent in April, and the performance gaps over the last 10 years were historic. The catch-up on discounted values has not yet taken place, though inflation expectations have been emerging and the first corporate reports confirm a very strong level of activity by the companies in our portfolio (in banking, healthcare and energy).

(1) The rating grades the funds on a scale from 1 to 7. This rating system is based on the average fluctuations of the net asset value over the past five years. It corresponds to the variation range of the portfolio upwards and downwards. If the net asset value is less than 5 years old, the rating is determined by other regulatory calculation methods. Historical data such as those used to calculate the rating may not be a reliable indication of the future risk profile. The current category is neither a guarantee nor an objective. Category 1 does not signify a risk-free investment.
