Commentary 28/03/2018

Economic activity remains weak with India's manufacturing index below expectations at 47.8 for February. GST revenues have continued to fall, losing -1% over the month. For the last 12 months running, India's Central deficit (-3.8%) has been in line with expectations. While credit growth generally remained low at +9.8% in February, retail loan growth was up by +20%. The trade deficit fell in February to $12 bn (vs $15bn in previous months). Despite this relative good news, the rupee has remained unchanged against the USD. Within the portfolio, we have reduced cyclical exposure by cutting back on financials (Icici Bank and Icici Prudential) and cement producers (Shree and Ultratech). Meanwhile, we have continued to strengthen on modern retail (Avenue Supermarts). While India is not (yet) the victim of a potential trade war with the United States, the Indian market did not manage to outperform the emerging market index in March, due to the weakness of its economic activity. April will allow us to measure the corporate debt level. This ratio is crucial in trying to determine when investment spending is likely to kick-in again and stimulate growth. We remain cautious over the short term on the Indian market.

(1) The rating grades the funds on a scale from 1 to 7. This rating system is based on the average fluctuations of the net asset value over the past five years. It corresponds to the variation range of the portfolio upwards and downwards. If the net asset value is less than 5 years old, the rating is determined by other regulatory calculation methods. Historical data such as those used to calculate the rating may not be a reliable indication of the future risk profile. The current category is neither a guarantee nor an objective. Category 1 does not signify a risk-free investment.
