Commentary 29/06/2018

Despite an initial gain in prices, USD-denominated Gold eventually ended broadly lower on the month, pressured by some key macro events. Chief among them was the expected Fed rate hike to 2%, coupled with a hawkish monetary policy statement signaling potentially two more rate hikes and core inflation reaching its 2% target by the end of the year. Further adding to gold's woes was Trump's decision to implement a 25% tariff on Chinese goods, which surprisingly pushed the US dollar higher. Pressure continued on the yellow metal as Trump threatened China further with 10% tariffs on $200 billion worth of goods. The downturn took a breather in the final third of June as Italy reassured EU could counterparts that it would not leave the single currency. A strengthening euro and commodity-linked currrencies versus the dollar gave gold some much needed support. Gold resumed its down trend as future Fed interest rate anticipations attracted dividend hunting investors. In this market configuration, the overlay programme responded well to gold's extended weakness offsetting losses by 1.40%.

(1) The rating grades the funds on a scale from 1 to 7. This rating system is based on the average fluctuations of the net asset value over the past five years. It corresponds to the variation range of the portfolio upwards and downwards. If the net asset value is less than 5 years old, the rating is determined by other regulatory calculation methods. Historical data such as those used to calculate the rating may not be a reliable indication of the future risk profile. The current category is neither a guarantee nor an objective. Category 1 does not signify a risk-free investment.
