Commentary 30/11/2018

In November global equity markets improved (MSCI World +1%), led by Value stocks (MSCI Value +1.7%) which outperformed Growth names (MSCI Growth +0.7%). Eurozone equities were down (MSCI Europe -1%), on the back of news that Germany's economy contracted by 0.2% due to reduced exports, which marked the first shrinkage in 3 years. Furthermore, the PMI of the euro area, diminished (from 53.1 to 52.7) over gloomy prospects regarding Italy where manufacturing has shrunk for 2 months and the unemployment rate increased. The S&P 500 gained +1.8%, buoyed by healthy US data based on strong manufacturing, factory orders and retail sales. Tech stocks tumbled at the end of the month and Apple fared particularly poorly. Additionally, the dovish Fed commentary on November 28th reassured markets, hinting that they could slow the pace of rate rises. While this was good news for bond markets, government bond prices rose earlier in November when overall risky asset sentiment was still weak and digested the market downturn of October. Credit spreads have been put under pressure and consequently widened to their largest level since 2016. The greenback remained almost neutral against the Euro (-0.1%), while it rose slightly against the JPY (+0.5%) and depreciated against the CHF (-0.9%). In commodity markets, oil prices plunged to a new low (WTI -22%) due to rising US oil inventories and to investors' perceptions that US sanctions on Iran will be postponed or at least subdued. Hedge Funds ended the month in negative territory (HFRX Global HF -0.6%), driven by the underperformance of Equity Market Neutral strategies (HFRX Equity Market Neutral -1.6%) and Equity L/S strategies (HFRX Equity Hedge -0.6%).Our fund PFA CONCENTRATED class A declined 0.42%Our Macro managers had a very bad month, essentially hurt by the dramatic drop of the price of oil, and the brutal increase of the price of Natural Gas, that surprised the markets by the speed and magnitude of both moves, with two managers down 8.5% and 5.6% respectively, offset by a European manager focused on Carbon certificate and German electricity contracts that was up 12.3% for the month, leaving the group's performance at -1.5%.Trend following/ systematic macro managers had a mixed month, with half the managers down between 3 and 4% whilst one manager up 10% in its most leverage version, illustrating the diversification within that group. The net return for the group was down 0.3% for the month. One Multistrategy manager was down 1.5%, another was flat, and a third was up 1.5%, leaving the group down 0.6% for the month. Event Driven was the best performing group, with all managers in positive territory, between +1.1% and +2.4%, leaving the group up 1.6% for the monthGlobal Long Short Equity had a mixed month, ranging between flat to +3.3%, with only two managers losing money, around -1.5% , leaving the group at -1.1%.

(1) The rating grades the funds on a scale from 1 to 7. This rating system is based on the average fluctuations of the net asset value over the past five years. It corresponds to the variation range of the portfolio upwards and downwards. If the net asset value is less than 5 years old, the rating is determined by other regulatory calculation methods. Historical data such as those used to calculate the rating may not be a reliable indication of the future risk profile. The current category is neither a guarantee nor an objective. Category 1 does not signify a risk-free investment.
