Commentary 31/01/2019

Market comment: The first month of the year was the best January since 1987 in US equities (S&P 500 up 8.0%). It was characterized by a series of geopolitical developments in the US, in Europe and in China, with the markets remaining mostly positive throughout the month. In the US, the partial government shutdown, its longest historically, ended on the 25th. On the 30th, the Fed decided to keep rates unchanged and maintained its reserved rate outlook. The USD index moved in negative territory, and depreciated against most currencies, except for the EUR. In the UK, the House of Commons rejected the Brexit agreement on the 15th. This triggered a confidence vote on the following day, which PM Theresa May won by a small margin. On the 29th, the MPs agreed that Mrs. May could renegotiate the deal with Brussels. However, the President of the EU Council Donald Tusk argued that the EU wasn't open for renegotiation and would consider an extension to the Brexit deadline. In Euro zone, economic data released on the last day of the month indicated poor growth for Q4 2018, with Italy slipping into recession, and European sovereign rates mostly dropped. This didn't stop equities from rallying (Eurostoxx 50 +5.6%). China released its Q4 2018 economic figures, which implied their worst annual growth since 1990. This brought back concerns on global economic slowdown concerns, and resulted in a rally in precious metals (gold + 3.1%, silver +3.6%). Elsewhere in commodities, oil prices (WTI up 17.9%, Brent up 12.8%) rallied as a result of the OPEC output decrease and the tensions in Venezuela. In that context, Hedge funds were up (HFRX Global HF Index +2.1%), led mainly by Equity L/S strategies (HFRX Equity Hedge +3.9%).Fund comment: The fund returned 0.51% (Class A USD) in January, following a positive 1.1% return in December when global markets collapsed (as a reminder MSCI World Index declined -7.7% in December). All of the underlying strategies posted positive returns in January. Global Macro managers contributed the most in December and January. In January a number of the macro funds captured the risk on move across asset classes, especially in Emerging Markets. Non-Directional Equity managers were broadly positive, with returns coming both from systematic and discretionary funds. Event Driven funds made money mainly from M&A activity. Particularly our Asia focused Event fund benefitted from increased merger activity in the region.

(1) The rating grades the funds on a scale from 1 to 7. This rating system is based on the average fluctuations of the net asset value over the past five years. It corresponds to the variation range of the portfolio upwards and downwards. If the net asset value is less than 5 years old, the rating is determined by other regulatory calculation methods. Historical data such as those used to calculate the rating may not be a reliable indication of the future risk profile. The current category is neither a guarantee nor an objective. Category 1 does not signify a risk-free investment.
