Commentary 31/12/2017

Global financial markets posted mixed performance in December to conclude a strong year of gains for 2017 with surging equity markets globally. US equities were also mixed for the month, with gains in large cap offset by declines in small capitalizations. Sector gains were mainly driven by energy and consumer discretionary, and offset by declines in healthcare, semiconductors and utilities. US interest rates increased modestly during the month. Commodities were up in December with gains led by copper, oil, aluminium and gold. Our Hedge Funds posted slight gains in December to end 2017 with positive returns. Our Event Driven managers posted slight gains in December led by distressed positions, Special Situations in equities and Merger Arbitrage. They ended the year with +7.5% and benefited from a supportive M&A environment, particularly in the TMT and healthcare sectors. Multistrategy managers gained in December and benefited from exposure to Relative Value equities and some credit. They ended up the year at +6.2%. Our Non-Directional Equities managers posted slight gains in December and ended the year up +5.8% from both mean reverting factor based strategies and fundamental managers. Our Macro managers posted slight gains from commodity and currency trading in December, and ended the year in positive territory at +4.0%. CTA managers posted positive performances in systematic trend-following during the month and ended the year at +2.2%. Fixed income-based Relative Value Arbitrage managers posted negative returns in December and ended the year in positive territory at +1.8%. We remain constructive on the opportunity set for Hedge Funds entering 2018 as many opportunities arise from risk parity strategies, risk premia, quantitative trading and big data, emerging Asia, rising interest rates, rising crude prices, geo-political risks, etc.

(1) The rating grades the funds on a scale from 1 to 7. This rating system is based on the average fluctuations of the net asset value over the past five years. It corresponds to the variation range of the portfolio upwards and downwards. If the net asset value is less than 5 years old, the rating is determined by other regulatory calculation methods. Historical data such as those used to calculate the rating may not be a reliable indication of the future risk profile. The current category is neither a guarantee nor an objective. Category 1 does not signify a risk-free investment.
