Commentary 31/03/2019

March saw a massive decline in sovereign bond yields in Europe and the United States. Yield curves in 15 OECD countries have been reversed, confirming concerns about growth in developed countries and the dramatic shift in monetary policy made by the US Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank. We are going through a rather surprising period, which cannot last very long, since both risky and non-risky assets are simultaneously recording very positive performances in absolute terms. Credit and equities have been continuing to rise while the economic outlook darkens and valuations do not seem particularly attractive. Accordingly, there is a divergence that gives hope of a recovery in activity following the halt in US rates hikes, resumption of the low-cost refinancing programme for European banks (TLTRO III), and hopes of a trade agreement between the United States and China. The secondary credit market has also been benefiting from a technical imbalance between weak primary supply and the still high demand for risky assets. Credit spreads have meanwhile continued to tighten and are back at levels last seen early in Q4 2018. Investment grade corporate bonds gained +1.37% this month, while corporate high yields posted a more modest +1.05% due to their lower interest rate sensitivity. The question that arises now is: how long will this movement last?

(1) The rating grades the funds on a scale from 1 to 7. This rating system is based on the average fluctuations of the net asset value over the past five years. It corresponds to the variation range of the portfolio upwards and downwards. If the net asset value is less than 5 years old, the rating is determined by other regulatory calculation methods. Historical data such as those used to calculate the rating may not be a reliable indication of the future risk profile. The current category is neither a guarantee nor an objective. Category 1 does not signify a risk-free investment.
