Commentary 31/10/2017

The recovery in investment, the acceleration in global consumption and an increasingly tight labour market produced an acceleration in world growth during October. Developed countries, Europe and the United States, as well as Japan and China posted highly encouraging year-on-year GDP estimates and very high levels of consumer confidence. The ECB's October 26 meeting did not disappoint. Despite its reduction in QE — from €60 billion to €30 billion, starting January for the next nine months — its tone remains very accommodating. The central bank has announced that purchases already made and maturing will be reinvested, and that rates will remain lastingly low after even the end of QE. What's more, the precise end date for the buy-back programme has not been specified, which suggests possible extensions if the economic and financial situation deteriorates in the euro zone. The stream of positive headlines continued with S&P raising Italy's national rating to BBB (Investment Grade), and with strengthened market confidence in the Trump Administration's ability to implement its long-awaited tax reform. Credit and bond market reactions were positive since investment grade and high yield spreads as well as European bonds eased as a result of this good news flow. Only emerging markets in local currencies saw profit-taking against the strengthening US dollar. The fund remains conservatively positioned in terms of its rate sensitivity and is continuing to selectively reduce its directional exposure to the highly-priced credit market.

(1) The rating grades the funds on a scale from 1 to 7. This rating system is based on the average fluctuations of the net asset value over the past five years. It corresponds to the variation range of the portfolio upwards and downwards. If the net asset value is less than 5 years old, the rating is determined by other regulatory calculation methods. Historical data such as those used to calculate the rating may not be a reliable indication of the future risk profile. The current category is neither a guarantee nor an objective. Category 1 does not signify a risk-free investment.
