Commentary 31/10/2017

According to FactSet's latest Earnings Insight report (dated November 3, 2017), some 81% of the S&P 500 Index component companies have reported their results. 74% of these have reported better than expected earnings per share numbers and 66% better than projected revenues. Information Technology was one of the leading sectors in delivering upside surprises with an impressive 90% of the Information Technology sector's companies reporting earnings above expectations. That said, all has not been calm as we have seen a few notable misses, primarily in the Biotech/Pharma area, where some companies experienced negative surprises in terms of their specific products. When that was the case, investors punished them severely and quickly. That said, for longer-term investors that can often lead to opportunity as sifting through the data and carnage sometimes can lead to finding short-term oversold stocks that will yield bountiful future returns. On a macro level, the American economy seems to be going from strength to strength. This was bolstered by the recently released employment statistics showing a 261,000 jump in jobs for October and the unemployment level falling to a 17 year low of 4.1%. That economic strength coupled with the weaker dollar should continue to propel robust U.S. corporate profit reports in this quarter and into 2018.

(1) The rating grades the funds on a scale from 1 to 7. This rating system is based on the average fluctuations of the net asset value over the past five years. It corresponds to the variation range of the portfolio upwards and downwards. If the net asset value is less than 5 years old, the rating is determined by other regulatory calculation methods. Historical data such as those used to calculate the rating may not be a reliable indication of the future risk profile. The current category is neither a guarantee nor an objective. Category 1 does not signify a risk-free investment.
